A Day On The Clay / The Golden Ochre Years .
![]() |
A Double-Feature DVD with two programmes on D1015 Western Champion. THE GOLDEN OCHRE YEARS is a brand new programme documenting the highlights of the locomotives first four years on the main line whilst carrying the unique golden ochre livery, which began on January 28th 2002 with its first test run to Sheffield. Over the following four years D1015 appeared on 22 railtours and special charters in this guise, most of which are featured here. During that time the locomotive traveled to destinations old and new, so as well as re-visiting many classic ‘Thousand’ haunts, Champion is also seen off the beaten track at locations such as Euston, York, Settle, Llandovery and Hest Bank. The other programme on this DVD is A DAY ON THE CLAY. Previously only available on VHS, this has been much-requested for release on DVD, and therefore is an ideal companion for the new programme. This is a detailed and fascinating move-by-move account of the day that D1015 Western Champion spent a day working EWS china clay trains off St Blazey depot in Cornwall. That day was Friday 30th August 2002 – the day when the locomotive became the first Diesel-Hydraulic to work a freight train on the main line for 25 years. The programme also includes an exclusive ‘Wired for Sound’ cab ride from Fowey Docks to Goonbarrow Sidings. This Double-Feature DVD will be released in early May.

The birth of the hydraulics was a direct result of the extent to which the former BR regions existed as separate companies even under the overall banner of nationalisation. The firm belief in hydraulic as opposed to electric transmission by the Western Region management gave birth to Warships, Westerns Hymeks and the class 14 O-6-O. These types continued the GWR tradition of distinctive and nonstandard power for some years after the end of steam, before the corporate railway of the late 70s swept them off the mainline. Fortunately some survive - enjoy them in this programme. (Running time 60 minutes approx.).

A Day On The Clay - A video of workings in Cornwall during 2002.
![]() |
In conjunction with Locomaster
Profiles the Diesel Traction Group has released a video detailing the workings
of D1015 Western Champion around St. Blazey, in Cornwall, during August
2002 on China Clay freight workings for EWS.
Starting
off briefly we see D1015 heading for Bristol in charge of a van train
(complete with two class 50's and a class 67!) followed by its working
into Cornwall, the 6V70 China Clay empties.
The
days activities for the China Clay workings on the 29th August
starts at St. Blazey with a driver receiving static training on the loco.
Several line side shots showing the loco travelling to Fowey Docks to get
its first train for Goonbarrow are followed by a cab ride from Fowey
through to Goonbarrow. With microphones discreetly placed in the rear cab
you can hear the full cry of both Maybachs hard at work over Treverin and
Luxulyan banks.
Once
the empty wagons are deposited we again return to the line side at various
locations to see (and hear) D1015 working hard to lift over 670 tons of
China Clay towards Fowey Docks.
The
tape is 60 minutes long and is priced at £16.95 and is available from :
