With the coming of the diesel age on British Railways private companies were keen to sell their products to both British Railways and private locomotive builders. Even the smallest of items often featured an example of a locomotive to which they were fitted and proclaimed how successful their product had made the class concerned.

Products ranged from engines and transmissions to gauges and glass, even types of toilet!. All were advertised in the railway press at the time starting around 1958 onwards.

Below are some samples of the things that companies sold through adverts using locomotives. One advert featured D1524, the class 47 that we repainted to near original condition for Old Oak Common….. and its still going strong!

This advertisement was issued by B.R.W.R. to let the public know how it was improving its services.

This is one of several posters issued featuring the class 52's.
