THE FESTIVAL OF THE SEA

Monday 21st July, 2008

TO LIVERPOOL FOR THE PARADE OF SAIL

OVER ONE HUNDRED TALL AND HISTORIC SHIPS PREPARE TO SAIL

We are very pleased to offer this very special excursion to a very special event, the Parade of Sail at the end of the Festival of the Sea, which this year takes place at LIVERPOOL. This city on the River Mersey is one of the world's most famous ports, with one of the most recognised waterfronts on earth. Pride of place are the Three Graces, the Royal Liver Building, the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board HQ and the Cunard Building, but the legacy of its past has also been preserved in the Albert Dock complex. Indeed, most of the recorded history of Liverpool is bound up with its maritime tradition, as one of the busiest trans-Atlantic ports, for trade with, well, actually just about everywhere in the world!

On this day, the glamour of the days of sail will take over the Mersey, with over a hundred vessels leaving their berths to line up in the Mersey ready to parade past the Pier Head - during the five hours or more that you will have in Liverpool.

Of course, there is much more to Liverpool and Merseyside, especially this year when the city is European Capital of Culture. Albert Dock, the largest group of Grade I Listed buildings in Britain, is Liverpool's number one attraction in its stunning World Heritage waterfront setting. Then there is Tate Liverpool, the Beatles story, Merseyside Maritime Museum, the unique Williamson Tunnels, ferries across the Mersey and a superb shopping centre. Still not enough? Then frequent trains on the local rail network can get you to seaside Southport, New Brighton, West Kirby and more. Across the Mersey, Birkenhead Park was the first public park in Britain, and provided the blueprint for New York's Central Park. Not far away is the garden village at Port Sunlight and the Lever Art Gallery. The list just goes on!

This train will be hauled throughout by Western Class 52 diesel No.D1015 Western Champion, making a first ever visit for the Class to Liverpool.

The Red Dragon
Saturday 9th August

A mid-summer treat is on offer as D1015 ‘Western Champion’ heads for Swansea along the South Wales main line. There will be a break at Swansea to enjoy this vibrant city before returning along the main line to Newport.

From Newport we take the highly scenic North and West route through Abergavenny and Hereford. From here we turn towards Ledbury and Worcester, thus linking two of the great Cathedral cities in England. From Worcester we head back to London via Stroud and Kemble to Swindon with a fast run along the main line to London Paddington

The Dartmouth Arrow for the Red Arrows
Saturday 30th August

Class 52 Western Hydraulic D1015 ‘Western Champion’ will haul a special train to the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta in the beautiful south hams district of Devon.

The highlight of the regatta will be the display by the Red Arrows. This is one of the most spectacular displays the aerobatics team do as they fly over the port just skimming across the steep hills that surround Dartmouth – it really is a show to witness at first hand. There will also be a display by a RAF Typhoon.

Leaving Bristol mid-morning relax as D1015 takes the strain as we head towards Kingswear.
On arrival at Kingswear take the foot ferry across the river Dart and explore the olde worlde port of Dartmouth bedecked in all it’s regatta finery before enjoying the spectacle of the Red Arrows and the other flying exhibits. Rejoin the train as D1015 speeds you homewards, after an enjoyable day at Dartmouth setting down as outward

The Western Hind

In late Summer we head back to Cornwall with D1015 visiting the steeply graded Falmouth branch.

The routing for this train will see D1015 heading from London Paddington along the ‘Berks & Hants’ to Taunton along the Great Western main line to Plymouth where a Class 66 diesel will be attached to assist with the reversal at Falmouth.
