D821 Running Dates and Driver Experience Course Dates announced.

4th December 2011

With the need to change the ‘A’ end pre-heater and turbo blower the opportunity has been taken this year to renew some seized and sheared off screws on both fire pull covers involving drilling out, tapping and renewing with the correct countersunk screws and renewal of the seals. The nose floors behind both the headcode apertures have been derusted, cleaned and repainted. The ‘A’ end engine room corridor floor under the walkway has been cleaned and the engine room and V of the engine cleaned whilst the pre-heater and blower were removed. One of the ‘A’ end cab roof hatches has been repaired and refitted and a replacement for the missing ‘A’ end engine room hatch made and fitted both with brass hinges.

The missing ‘B’ end non corridor side cooler group handle, lug and pin for securing the slats in the open position were made and refitted (not an easy job). The missing boiler water filler opening grill at this end was then also refitted. The ‘B’ end drain valve located between the top of the bogie and the underside of the body was refitted (an even more difficult and dirty job). The ‘B’ end pre-heater motor was changed due to it being seized. Last years reported low power problem with ‘B’ engine was investigated and was quite involved to rectify successfully (Sainthood for someone beckoned but ultimately was not granted) although those of you who sampled the loco during the diesel gala will have noticed just how strong the loco is again when accelerating.

The Battery levels were checked and topped up as required and charged. The lips around the battery boxes that tend to collect water were derusted and repainted to give a few more years protection before needing to be done yet again! A leak on one of the ‘B’ engine injectors was also fixed. The ‘B’ end white marker light was rewired to cure an electrical fault. Some of the bodywork was patched up due to splits in the filler before it got too bad. The replacement pre-heater was fitted after overhaul/rebuilding at the workshop and a replacement turbo blower was fitted at the same time. A replacement pre-heater exhaust stack was manufactured and fitted due to ‘metal moth’ and finally a fault with a chattering relay in the control desk in ‘A’ cab was investigated and the problem ascertained. Lots of fiddly time consuming jobs that often get overlooked.
